We would like to thank everyone who helped make this charity event a great success! Through this charity fair, we raised a total of RMB 300,762.70. Funds collected have been transferred to the China Charity Federation (CCF). Work on the school rebuilding will commence on 20 May 2009 and is expected to be completed by 20 Aug 2009. SSBA-SCS will have a team to visit the new school in September 2009.
11th April 2009 turned out to be a glorious day despite the forecast of rain. By 8 AM, vendors started streaming in to stock up their booths. There were about 90 stalls in total; on sale were delicious food prepared by “tai-tais” as well as restaurant chefs, and others selling wine, coffee, jewelry, furniture, toys, used items, etc. The game booths were a hit with both the young and old.
The on-site silent auction attracted quite a bit of interest and 18 items donated by generous companies and individuals were auctioned off. A unique recipe book comprising over 50 special recipes contributed by expats staying in Shanghai was launched at the fair. The book contains recipes for beef rendang, truffles, mushroom soup, lasagne, pad thai, Indian butter chicken, kaya, chiffon cake and numerous other mouth-watering dishes.
Throughout the day, visitors to the fair were entertained by music put together by DJ Dennis, and also by various live performances by the Shanghai American Middle School Jazz Band, SMIC Private School and our very own Singaporean crooners, Willy Tan and Francis Yuen.
Besides enjoying the yummy food and fine wine, games and lots of shopping opportunities, the lucky ones also won attractive raffle prizes including a Kayumanis romantic getaway in Nanjing, an air ticket to Hongkong, an iPOD, and many more.
This charity effort would not have been possible without the support of many kind-hearted and generous individuals and companies. We would like to thank all of them, and in particular, CapitaLand, which sponsored the venue and whose technicians gave us invaluable support; Pivot Marketing which took care of event management; and Promus Printing which sponsored the printing of the recipe book. We are grateful too, to all of you who donated in kind or in cash, and those who took the time to cook for the fair, help man the stalls or contributed their secret recipes. We thank the many vendors which supported the event by setting up shops at the fair. And finally, to all of you who came to the fair, thank you for supporting the event with your presence!

Dear SSBA-SCS Member,
The Shanghai Singapore Business Association - Singapore Club Shanghai (SSBA-SCS), together with the Shanghai House of Entrepreneurs, NUS (SHEN) and the China Charity Federation, will be organizing a charity food and fun fair at the Oasis Riviera Clubhouse on Saturday, 11 April 2009.
SSBA-SCS, which is run by a volunteer group of Singaporeans based in Shanghai, seeks to promote networking among Singaporeans, expatriates and the local communities in Shanghai. We regularly organize charity events as a way for us to contribute back to the society. In end-2007, the Starry Starry Night Charity Gala Dinner we organized raised RMB 1million, which was used to rebuild three schools in Jilin in north-eastern China. You may visit http://www.ssba-scs.com/index.html for a report and pictures of the school rebuilding project. Funds raised at the 11 April 2009 fair will be used for rebuilding a school in Jiangxi as the current school building is structurally unsound.
The 11 Apr 09 fair promises lots of food, games and shopping! A recipe book containing a collection of unique recipes contributed by expatriates staying in Shanghai will be launched at the fair. In addition, there will be a silent auction of artwork, romantic getaway, wine and other unique products/services donated by companies and individuals. A raffle draw will be conducted at the event.
We like to invite you, as a Corporate Member of SSBA-SCS to participate in this meaningful project, in any of the following ways:
Thank you and we hope to see you and your friends and family at the fair!
Yours sincerely,

With the funds raised through our Starry Starry Night Charity Gala Dinner held on 24 Nov 07, we selected three needy schools to rebuild in Jilin, in northeastern China:
| 双辽市红旗街聪明小学 | Before rebuilding:Click here |
| After rebuilding: Click here | |
| 松原宁江区毛都站镇三马架小学 | Before rebuilding:Click here |
| After rebuilding: Click here | |
| 永吉县西阳镇南响水小学 | Before rebuilding:Click here |

The buildings of these three schools were all graded as 危楼, or translated literally, “dangerous buildings”. In April 2008, we visited these schools to see for ourselves their current state. In May/June 2008, the three buildings were torn down, and rebuilding began. By August 2008, reconstruction was completed, and the school students started their new academic year in September 2008 in the new school buildings.
When we visited the reconstructed schools in October this year, we were very pleased to see how the schools have been transformed from dark, cracking, leaking unsound buildings to brand new, bright and sturdy looking buildings. We asked the students how they felt about their new schools, and many of them grinned and said that they now no longer worried about the buildings tumbling on them. They also liked their bright and clean new classrooms. The sparkle in their eyes melted our hearts!
We are thankful to the many who helped make this rebuilding effort a success. In particular, we are grateful to the many individual donors and corporate sponsors for their generous contributions. The corporate sponsors are listed below:
CapitaLand (China) Investment Co., Ltd

Deutsche Bank Private & Business Client

deVere & Partners

Roche Diagnostics (Shanghai) Ltd

Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited

We are also thankful to the China Charity Federation for connecting us to the needy schools and for supervising the rebuilding process. Last but not least, we are grateful to the local authorities for facilitating the reconstruction projects. For all three schools, the local government contributed funds to make the schools even better than what our funds alone would have been able to achieve.
