Introduction to Yangjiang

Yangjiang is a coastal city located in Southwestern Guangdong, with Jiangcheng District, Yangchun City, Yangdong County, Yangxi County and other two development zones Hailing Island Economic Development Experimental Zone and Yangjiang New & High-tech Industrial Development Zone under its municipality. The whole city has a population of 2.733 million covering an area of 7, 946.4 sq.km. Yangjiang has been respectively entitled as China Top Tourist City, China Best Eco-tourist City, China City of Knives and Scissors, Hometown of Kites, Hometown of Hot Spring, China City of Poetry, China Couplet Culture City, Guangdong Civilized City, China Top 50 Cities of Life Quality and city with the most profound development potential.

During recent years, its economic is growing rapidly and healthily with an annual GDP growth of 13.7%. GDP in 2009 reaches RMB5.18 billion Yuan with a growth of 12.2%; actual attracted foreign investment has increased by 20.7%, which has been range the first province wide; total amount of foreign trade is still increased by 10.1% though there is negative increases province wide, and the increase rate has ranged the third province wide. The industrial system that is supported by industries like hardware, knifes & scissors, special steel, food processing, textile & clothing, electronics, electrical and mechanical materials, pharmaceutical chemicals, furniture weaving is formed. Hardware and knifes & scissors is Yangjiang’s most characteristic, advantageous industry and one of China’s top 100 industries. There are more than 1,500 hardware enterprises in Yangjiang, which amount for 65% of the whole nation’s production, and export amount make up for 80% national wide. Yangjiang is not just in name only, but also in reality China City of Knives and Scissors, and also china’s industrial base for knives and scissors.

Wedged between hills and waters, Yangjiang is endowed with an excellent favorable geographic location. Furthermore the city’s adjacency to the Pearl River Delta makes itself a latecomer with obvious advantages. Yangjiang’s main advantages are as follows:

1.1 advantages in geographic location and transportation

Yangjiang is adjacent to Jiangmen with Maoming to its west. It’s 210 km to Guangzhou, 186 km to Zhuhai, 143 nm to Hong Kong, 129 nm to Macau. It a direct hinterland of the Pearl River Delta, a corridor from west Guangdong to the Pearl River Delta, an important traffic crossroads and estuary in western Guangdong. Kaiping-Yangjiang Expressway, Yangjiang-Maoming Expressway, West Guangdong Coastal Expressway, No. 325 National Highway and Sanshui-Maoming Expressway are all passing through the whole city. Yangjiang-Yangchun Railway directly reaches the wharfs in Yangjiang Port. The under construction expressway from Yangjiang Port to Yunfu is expected to make Yangjiang a vital road traffic artery for Guangdong to connect the other provinces in Southwestern China. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge under construction has reduced the distance between Yangjiang and Hong Kong; Pearl River Delta Inter-city Railway will reach Yangjiang as well. The Western Coastal Express Railway to be started once more highlights Yangjiang’s geographic advantages. As an economic development zone has already been set up by the national government in Beihai Bay, Guangxi, while Yangjiang is located right in the central area between the Pearl River Delta Economic Circle and Beibu Bay Economic Circle, consequently the city is expected to play an significant role as a bridge and a bond connecting above-mentioned two economic circles. At the sometime Yangjiang is also an important economic corridor of Pearl River Delta and ASEAN Economic Cooperation.

Yangjiang Port enjoys advantages geographic conditions of profound development potentials. The port is National Grade One Foreign Trade Seaport. Up to now, 6 over 10-thousand-ton class wharfs have been completed, calling 100 thousand-ton class cargo ships. Hailing Bay is one of the rare deep water bays province wide. In Guangdong’s layout of development priority zones, Hailing Bay has become a crucial region in future development. Yangjiang Port Fengtou Port area is able to construct 200 thousand-ton class to 300 thousand-ton class multiclass, multifunctional deepwater berth wharfs, and very suitable for portside industry and modern logistics.

1.2 Advantages in land resources

Yangjiang is rich in land resources. The whole city covers an area of 7, 946 sq. km. and has a population density of 3, 300 per sq.km. . It is one of the most low-populated cities in Guangdong. At present overall area of the city’s construction land is 565 sq. km., amounting for 7.1% of the overall area. Further more Yangjiang has 600 sq.km. arable land as backup construction land resources. Sufficient land resources for industrial development can also be artificially maintained through reclamation of tidal flats and neritic regions.

1.3 Advantages in environment

Yangjiang is one of the regions of good ecological environment province wide. It is appraised as excellent in the assessments of Target-related Responsibility System of Environmental Protection during four continuous years.

At present, air quality in Yangjiang is better than national grade Ⅱ quality standard. Drinking water, surface waters and estuarine waters quality all attain national grade Ⅱ quality standard at 100% quality standard. There are beautiful sceneries and famous site, including the famous Hailing National 4A Costal Tourist Area, “South China Sea Ⅰ ”Guangdong Silk Road Museum, Yangchun Lingxiao Rock National Geopark, Yangjiang Hot Spring Resort and the Star Islands in East Lake that can be compared with Zhejiang Qiandao Lake. Overall, Yangjiang’s atmospheric environment and water environment capacity is huge; it is able to undertake more industrial projects. At the same time, the industries in Yangjiang is still mainly light industries, hence its development space to undertake heavy industry is huge with broad prospect.

1.4 Resources advantages

1.4.1 Rich water resources

Yangjiang is adjacent to the South China Sea, so it enjoys rich surface waters, subterranean water and good quality drinking water and good quality drinking water head sites. Among those rivers that run all over the city there are 24rivers with more than 100sq rainwater gathering area. Moyang River is one of the biggest rivers in Guangdong. It is a river that forms its own system and runs into the sea independently. annul average rainfall is 2, 252 millimeters, whereas annual average amount of runoff is only 1.09billion cubic meters, accordingly the potential of disposable water storage is well enough to meet industrial and domestic water demand.

1.4.2 Adequate power and energy resources

Yangjiang is becoming a momentous energy base of Guangdong. The first two gensets of Guangdong Huaxia Yangxi County Thermal Power Station has been put into commercial production, China’s biggest nuclear station----Yangjiang Nuclear Station has been started in 2008, and its first stage two generating sets will be put into commercial production in 2013. Pre-project work of a multitude of electric power projects such as pumped storage power station, win power station etc. is speeding up. Once these electric power projects has completed, installed generation capacity of electric power in Yangjiang is estimated to exceed 1, 8 00 kilowatt, which will enable adequate, stable, cheap electricity supply in the city.

1.4.3Abundant manpower resources

Yangjiang is a traditional light industry base with a large amount of highly skilled industrial workers. At present there are more than 35, 000industrial workers working in the city. Yangjiang Vocational and Technical College, Yangjiang Vestibule School and Yangjiang Vocational High School altogether have an enrolment of 23, 700 students. These schools train and provide stable, skilled manpower resources for enterprises each year.

1.4.4 Advantages in industrial parks and district construction

At present four industrial transfer parks under collaborative construction of Yangjiang and the Pearl River Delta area are designated as prefecture-level industrial shift parks. Among these parks, Guangzhou (Yangjiang) industrial transfer park is conferred with the title as a demonstration industry transfer park, whose total planned area is more than 80 sq. km. At present certain development has been achieved, industrial projects like Cargill, Millennium litho, Depo Technology, Deer Electronic Appliance, China Resources Cement, Hanneng LED etc. have settled in continuously.

At present, Yangjiang has stepped in a rapid growing new era. It is speeding up “five regions, one city” policy that is “province wide double shift demonstration base, coastal port side industrial base, China knifes and scissors industrial base, international recreation and travel resort, circle-Pearl River Delta modern agricultural base and Guangdong livable coastal new city for undertaking”, striking efforts to build Yangjiang into a new industrial city after three industrial cooperative developments. The city’s railway system, expressway system, port area transportation network is going to connect and melt into the Pearl River Delta transportation network so as to speed up the pace of attracting investment, to make Yagnjiang a main city in Western Guangdong to undertake industrial shifts form Pearl River Delta , national and abroad wide. With different resources advantages and leading enterprises, the city is speeding up modern industrial system construction. With coastal port side resources the city is going to make itself a international heavy chemical industrial base, to develop port side industries like fine chemical industry, machinery and equipment, food processing, alloy material, oceanic biology, etc. with car bearings, driving band, car air conditioner equipment etc. enterprises to make Yangjiang a car spare parts base; with Cargill as a leading enterprise to make the city a grain and vegetable oil processing base in Western Guangdong; with Yagnjiang nuclear , Yangxi County Thermal Power Station to make the city an important energy and power base in Guangdong; to use the international brand effect of “the First Wreck in South China Sea” to make Yangjiang a national coastal travel and recreation destination; To strike efforts to develop characteristic agriculture and oceanic fishery, to make Yangjiang a “shopping basket” for Pearl River Delta area, Hong Kong and Macau; an agriculture, forestry and ecology recreation travel base.
