History

The Singapore Club Shanghai (SCS) was first established in 1988 to bring together fellow Singaporeans working and living in Shanghai. Through time, the club soon became a disucssion and socialising platform for the Singaporeans business community. The fast growing Chinese market, the increased level of investments in China by Singaporean businesses and the increased number of Singaporeans working in Shanghai gradually led to the formation of the Shanghai Singapore Business Association (SSBA) in 1997 to further its causes and interests.

The two communities integrate soon after the objective of serving the Singaporean business community and their families. It aims to enable Singaporeans to maintain in contact with one another through social and business activities. In addition, SSBA-SCS also provides a focal point for newly arrived Singaporeans in Shanghai and to provide assistance when necessary.

The Club is non-profit and the Board Members are all voulnteers without compensation. We encourage and welcome members to assist and support in the Club activites or to join us in making SSBA-SCS more successful.

A 20-Year Heritage

Established in 1988, Singapore Club, Shanghai, has been addressing the needs of Singaporeans and their families living in Shanghai for the past 20 years. As interests and investments made by Singaporeans grew in Shanghai over the years, the Shanghai Singapore Business Association was born in 1997 to provide a platform for Singaporean businesses to connect and learn from each other. When SCS and SSBA met, the synergistic potential was too strong to resist and the two bodies ‘wedded’ to form what is now the largest and the most active overseas Singapore Club in the world, SSBA-SCS.

As a non-profit voluntary organisation, fueled by the tenacity of fellow Singaporeans, SSBA-SCS has grown by leaps and bounds – now, we are a 1000-strong congregation!

Our Impetus

SSBA-SCS provides a nurturing conduit for networking among Singaporeans, other expatriates, as well as the local community. There are also industry-specific groups to maximise business opportunities as well as to share best practices and industry information. We also maintain strong ties with Singapore International Foundation (SIF), International Enterprise Singapore (IE Singapore), business chambers and local Chinese business communities. Moreover, our span is beyond Shanghai, we have also linked up with FERT/MORFTECS located in cities of neighbouring provinces and other Singapore Clubs in China.

Since 2003, SSBA-SCS have been organising the largest National Day Dinner celebration outside Singapore! In another milestone, we, together with SIF, jointly organised the 4th SIF Overseas Conference in Shanghai in 2004. Since then, we have been actively organising various business forums.

With the goal of not only fostering ties among Singaporeans, SSBA-SCS seeks to strengthen the bonds between our members. We provide numerous networking opportunities among various business communities and chambers to increase the exposure of our members to a wider audience and market.

1. Buzz Nites – usually held with a mini-talk on various topics from geomancy to new legal systems in China, the setting is casual, allowing fellow Singaporeans to meet, network and have a buffet dinner together.

2. Dinner Talk – formal events held in a hotel setting involving business or government leaders who would deliver talks in their respective field of expertise. This broad-range exposure also enhances the profile and stature of Singaporean businesses in Shanghai.

3. Business cum leisure visits – to other cities in China are organised about twice a year, providing a chance for Singaporean businessmen to meet economic bureaus and government officials of other cities. At the same time, families can travel and sightsee together.

4. Industry-group Networking Sessions – frequently organised to allow members to interact, sharing industry information, business opportunities, concerns and promoting best practices.

5. Joint Chamber Activities – including luncheon and dinner talks have increased in frequency and popularity where members from various chambers can meet and network. Our partners include HKCCC, Austcham, Britcham, CBCC, MAPRCC, Swisscham and IBAS

6. Sports Events – such as golf, basketball, soccer and badminton allow members to meet up for good clean fun and promote good health.

7. Community Service – such as visits to old folks home, orphanages, and fund-raising projects for various charity organisations reminds us of our social responsibilities to the community and virtues of giving back.
