3 March 2007
Buzz Nite - Yuan Xiao 2007
Location: Shanghai Regent Hotel
Description: "Lou Hei"! the 200 guests at the Shanghai Regent Hotel ballroom shouted in unison as we celebrated Yuan Xiao on Sunday 4 March 2007. It must be amusing to see a ballroom of grown-ups standing around a table, waving their chopsticks, speaking loudly and messing up a beautiful platter of salad.

Yu Sheng, created by chefs in Singapore during the early 70s, was meant to be a Chinese New Year dish which could be eaten together in one big plate. The ingredients grew in variety and became more colourful through the years. The high tossing was gradually developed by enthusiastic diners. Today tossing Yu Sheng has become a part of our food culture and it symbolises the high aspirations and wishes we have for the new year.

CG Chan, the event's Guest-of-Honour, noted that such event brings people joy and encourages togetherness. Sharing a feast is a great way to celebrate life.

So let us raise our chopsticks and toss for happiness, prosperity and progess for everyone in the year of the Golden Pig.

15 April 2007
Business Executive Night
Location: Ballroom A, Regent Hotel
Description: Together with SHEN, we organized the Business Executive Night on 15 April 2007 at Regent Hotel. We invited Mr Ignatius Lim as the Main Speaker and a panel of 5 other Singaporeans from a diverse field to share their views and experiences in China.

Shanghai City is growing rapidly and its total trade with Singapore is about US$6 billion. Its growing sectors include the High Tech. Banking & Finance. Retail and Business Service Sector (alternatively known as Business Process Outsourcing centres). Singaporeans are familiar with Jiangsu province due to our investment in the Suzhou Investment Park. Many senior government officals from Jiangsu received their training in Singapore and are familiar with how Singapore works. Nanjing and Wuxi are poised to be important cities in Jiangsu. Zhejiang province is the land of millionaires. Among the largest 500 private owned enterprises, an atonishing 220 are owned by people from Zhejiang. Anhui province has been slower in the economic development but its rapidly learning from the successes of its neighbouring provinces.

Learning from its past experiences, Singapore companies invest as a group of partners thereby reaching an economic critical mass in a short period of time.

The first panel speaker, Beaver Tan spoke about his initial failed joint ventures. While investment opportunities abound, he cautioned investors to be careful when choosing partners even if investor held the majority stake. Preferably the option should be sole proprietorship. Agreeing with Ignatius and Beaver, Henry Rahardja of Bakerzin Shanghai finds it important to network and find mutual support among people in the same trade and/or same country. While Singaporeans and China may share the same root, culture and lifestyle is different.

Jason Quek, a recruitment manager, said that career opportunities ar plenty in China. On the plus side, Singaporeans employees are viewed as trustworthy and likeable professionals who have gone through rigorous academic training. However, we are also viewed as risk averse and are too cautious. Jenny Lee, a venture capitalist, urged would-be entrepenurs to dare to dream. Being an entrepenuer requires hardwork and passion but the pursuit is exciting and rewarding.

Sharon Tan volunteers with the Community Service Group of SSBA-SCS. Sharon said there is an immense amount of personal satisfaction which cannot be measure by money when serving the community and making meaningful differences to others' life by giving and sharing.

We held our Banking and Finance Forum on Aug 31, 2007 at the JW Marriot Shanghai Hotel.
The event was well-attended by guests not only from the banking and finance industry but also from various other sectors such as electronics and real estate. This bears testimony to the keen interest in what is arguably one of the most exciting industries in China.
Distinguished speakers from top-tier institutions shared their insights and expertise on the latest trends and developments. Richard Stanley from Citibank highlighted what he saw as key challenges facing foreign banks in China. Johnson Chng from Bain & Company complemented that with his recommendations on successful strategies for foreign banks operating in China. The audience was also thrilled to learn from Christine Ip of the exciting activities Standard Chartered Bank has in place for its priority banking customers while Michael Wei from China Merchants Bank shared with us his expertise in the credit card business. Last but not least, Ho Chee Hin, Centre Director of International Enterprise Singapore in Shanghai, recounted the progress of bilateral relations between Singapore and China to date and elaborated on how the government agency will continue to pave the way in strengthening our trade and investment relationship.

Leisure Tour
Location: Nanjing City and Jirong City
Description: Together with MAPROC, we organized a 2-day-1-night visit to Nanjing and Jirong, the latter being 45 mins from Nanjing.  Arriving in Nanjing in the early afternoon, the itinerary started with a visit to the historic sites of Sun Yatsen Mausoleum and Taiping Heavenly Palace in Nanjing. The next day we went to visit a grape vineyard at Jirong which is co-owned by a Singaporean Mr Tan. As a hobby, he grew several species of grapes via organic farming since 2005.  Mr Tan said grapes were best harvested during June to November. He is rather proud of this achievement and invited us to try out his grapes which were sweet and succulent. Mr Tan's  next move is to run a restuarant which sells grapes and grape-derived snacks. His greatest satisfaction was to see his grapes growing well and the joy of
being in a farmland away from dust and noise.

Visit of Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan
Location: JW Marriot Tomorrow Square
Description: Dr Vivian Balakrishnan was here in Shanghai during the October Golden Week and he found time to meet up with some Singaporeans. Dr Balakrishnan was here together with his delegation from MCYS, to support our Singapore athletes in the Special Olympics World Summer Game Shanghai 2007.
A dinner session with 9 other Singaporeans was organized at the Tang Dynasty Restaurant,  JW Marriot Hotel Tomorrow Square. A good mix of Singaporeans from all walks of lives and industries were invited for the dinner session. The participants included members from the Shanghai Singapore Business Association –Singapore Club Shanghai as well as the Shanghai House of Entrepreneurs, NUS.
Dr Balakrishnan set the tone for the night insisting that the session should be informal and casual, with the intentions of a more productive interaction with the participants. Interaction between the Minister and the participants took place free flowingly, with the Minister providing encouraging and bullish views on Singapore.
He voiced his concern over Singapore’s future generations as many of them were not tempered with the fire of hardship and crisis. Our new generation must constantly aim to upgrade and be competitive, or else they will be easily “irrelevant”.
The dinner was highly meaningful and insightful for all of the participants. The confidence and optimism displayed by one of Singapore’s brightest leaders put us all in good faith that Singapore will continue to prosper and do well.
